¢5.000 and ¢10.000 Bills To Lose Their Value in December, Replaced With New

In a few days the ¢1.000 and ¢2.000 bills lose their legal tender, as the Banco Central de Costa Rica (BCCR) continues to renew the country's paper notes, and introduces the new ¢5.000 and ¢10.000 bills
 

The new ¢5.000 and ¢10.000 will replace the existing which will lose their commercial value by the first week in December and then their legal tender months after.

The changes began with the introduction of the ¢20.000 bill, which has a small circulation, and then the ¢1.000 and ¢2.000 a few of months back.

The decision to introduce the new ¢5.000 and ¢10.000 at this time is the rise in circulation of currency with the seasonal payment of the Aguinaldo, the Christmas bonus, that hits the streets the first week in December.

To complete the change, the BCCR has announced the introduction of a ¢50.000 bill, but is holding off in circulation for now, as the Central Bank continues with is evaluation of the need of such a high denomination bill.

The new bills are harder to falsify, including a number of security measures to detect counterfeiting.
