Criminals After Firearms of Private Security Guards To Commit Robberies

Private security guards in Costa Rica are the new target of thieves looking to steal their guns to commit robberies. Carrying a firearm does not exempt a person from becoming a victim.

Statistics that this year there have already been one too many cases of a death of a person victim of having their firearm stolen.

One such case occurred in Tibás (north side of San José) a few months agon when a Tránsito (traffic) official was shot dead during the robbery of his weapon. Then there is the case of a private security guard of a Palí supermarket in Alajuela and another guard in Matina, Limón.

Roadblocks and spotchecks reveal a large number of illegal weapons seized by police, weapons that for the large part were stolen.

In the first six months of this year. the Fuerza Pública (police) report the seizure of 1.081 firearms. This in addition to the the 1.678 illegal firearms already in police custody, which is made up of automatics, revolvers, rifles, shotguns, homemade guns and submachine guns.

And it does not include the number of weapons being held in the evidence lockers of Fiscalias (prosecutor officer) around the country that are to be used at trials.

Authorities are asking one and all who carry "legal" weapons to give consideration to the proper care and handling of the weapon to prevent a tragedy due to theft or poor handling.

Carrying a gun may give you a false sense of security, which can easily turn against you in a second against an assault.
