Cuban Disability Experts in Nicaragua

Managua - Cuban experts in genetics and disabilities were set to arrive in the Nicaraguan capital to update a study on this field as a way of supporting the social programs of Daniel Ortega administration.

Alfredo Rodriguez, head of the Ernesto Che Guevara Medical Brigade, which has been working in Nicaragua since 2007, confirmed to Prensa Latina that 19 specialists for the project A Voice for All were expected to arrive this weekend. The brigade comprises professionals with experience in treating hearing, language and learning disorders, as well the diagnosis and treatment of chronic genetic diseases.

Most of these doctors participated in the initial A Voice for All study, which began in October 2009 and lasted 12 months, which will facilitate diagnosis at national scale, Rodriguez said.

The specialists will start their work on Monday, in the Nicaraguan capital, along with 300 Nicaraguan sixth-year medical students from the Latin American Medicine School (ELAM)in Cuba who recently returned home to continue their education under the tutelage of the Ernesto Che Guevara Medical Brigade members.

Rodriguez said the objective is to evaluate patient progress and find solutions to their problems, as well as to diagnose possible critical cases.

There is also the possibility of helping patients with 100 hearing aids donated by Cuba, said Rodriguez.
