Nicoya Could Generate a 7.8 Earthquake, Officials Say

The Volcanological and Seismological Observatory of Costa Rica reported that Nicoya has a potential to generate seismic tremors ranging between 7.7 and 7.9 degrees.

This was announced after a virtual forum held on Tuesday in which officals insisted that it is impossible to predict a date when such a massive event may take place.

OVSICORI director, Victor Gonzalez, said that people should be prepared and should maintain active local emergency committees for any eventuality.

OVSICORI specialists say the Nicoya earthquake would cause an uprising in the west coast of the peninsula that could reach a meter or meter and a half while at the same time sinking the Gulf area by a few inches.

Damage from such an event could be significant, considering the extensive development that has taken place in the Nicoya Peninsula in recent years.
