New Banknotes Coming on Monday

The Banco Central de Costa Rica (BCCR) announced that it will begin to circulate its new 5,000, 10,000 and 50,000 colon banknotes on Monday.  The central bank will begin withdrawing the older bills from circulation at the same time.

From Monday until December 31st both the old and new bills may be used interchangeably.  From January 1st to April 30th of next years the old bills will only be redeemed at commercial banks.

If you happen to hold on to the older bills past April 30th, you’ll need to make a trip to the Banco Central to exchange them.

In total, the central bank will circulate 10 million 50,000 colon bills, 64 million new 10,000 bills, and 20 million 5,000 bills.
