Nicaragua Observes World Wetlands Day

Nicaragua is observing the World Wetlands Day on Thursday, when the Ramsar Convention granted an international acknowledgement dedicated to the protection of these ecosystems to Playitas de Moyu.

The place, located in Dario City, Matagalpa, won this condition due to its hydrological and biological importance, as it is the only superficial reservoir in one of the driest areas of the country, ensuring the survival of a wide range of mammals, reptiles, fish and birds.

In order to observe the day, the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARENA) will hold activities in several municipalities, including San Miguelito, Masaya, Chinandega, Apacunca Valley and San Juan River.

The actions aim to present ways of coping with the consequences of climate change in the country and raise awareness among agencies and people about caring for nature, according to a press release from that institution published on Monday.
