Venezuelan Armed Force Guarantees Security in Primary Elections

The Bolivarian National Armed Force (FANB) is an institution that will always support the electoral authority to guarantee stability and peace in the elections, Defense Minister Henry Rangel stated on Sunday.

According to Rangel, the FANB has deployed its forces and resources to guarantee the opposition primary elections on Sunday.

"About 90,000 men have been deployed throughout the country, in support of the National Electoral Council, with a democratic attitude and a clear vision, to guarantee the people's peace when voting," the defense minister said in an interview given to journalist and Vice President Jose Vicente Rangel.

On Sunday, Venezuela opened voting stations for the opposition primary elections, from which the candidate that will run against President Hugo Chavez in the October 7 presidential polls will be elected.

Surveys show that most Venezuelan favor Chavez, and assess his performance as positive. Meanwhile, these opposition primary elections are crucial in its political aspirations.

In addition to the opposition presidential candidate, the candidates to 17 governments and 249 mayors' offices will be elected.

In another part of the interview with Jose Vicente Rangel, the defense minister stated that his ministry "has to be inspired in the values" of the 1999 Constitution and "in the achievements of the national and international policy of the institutional government."
