Guatemalan Ex-Dictator to Appear in Court

Guatemalan ex-dictator Efrain Rios Montt will appear in court on Thursday by order of a judge to make his first statement on the accusations of genocide during his de facto rule (1982-1983).

Rios Montt will account on the charges of crimes against humankind due to the massacres the Army committed in the indigenous area of Ixil, department of Quiche, and in the community Plan de Sanchez, in Baja Verapaz.

The former general and other military men are the intellectual and material authors of the massacres of the population, according to the Association for Justice and Reconciliation.

The army also massacred the Chimaltenango town and others, where over 1,771 men, women and children were killed.

The court in charge of similar cases against high-ranking officers subpoenaed Rios Montt since his mandate as a lawmaker ended on January 14 and he no longer has immunity.

Humanitarian organizations accuse the former general of dozens of massacres committed by the army during his 17-month rule.
