Rios
Montt
will
appear
in
court
on
Thursday
by
order
of a
judge
to
make
his
first
statement
on
the
accusations
of
genocide
during
his
de
facto
rule
(1982-1983).
Rios
Montt
will
account
on
the
charges
of
crimes
against
humankind
due
to
the
massacres
the
Army
committed
in
the
indigenous
area
of
Ixil,
department
of
Quiche,
and
in
the
community
Plan
de
Sanchez,
in
Baja
Verapaz.
The
former
general
and
other
military
men
are
the
intellectual
and
material
authors
of
the
massacres
of
the
population,
according
to
the
Association
for
Justice
and
Reconciliation.
The
army
also
massacred
the
Chimaltenango
town
and
others,
where
over
1,771
men,
women
and
children
were
killed.
The
court
in
charge
of
similar
cases
against
high-ranking
officers
subpoenaed
Rios
Montt
since
his
mandate
as a
lawmaker
ended
on
January
14
and
he
no
longer
has
immunity.
Humanitarian
organizations
accuse
the
former
general
of
dozens
of
massacres
committed
by
the
army
during
his
17-month
