Statistics on Violence against Women Increase in Honduras

The statistics on violence against women continue to increase today in Honduras, where last year there were 17,000 reports of incidents of this nature.

Gladys Lanza, Coordinator of the Visitacion Padilla Women's Movement, said that of those complaints only about 5,000 were processed, which means it needs a lot to be done in terms of social awareness to the effects of sexual discrimination.

So far in 2012, 3,000 complaints of domestic violence were filed in Honduras, but unfortunately for us the statistics do not tell us the reality because there are thousands of women who experience violence and do not the complaint, she said.

Lanza admitted that most complaints do not continue because the victims do not conclude the litigation, because they return with their partner, are coerced or discouraged by the delay in being called to a hearing, among other reasons.

This only encourages the attackers, said Lanza when appeared in the forum Alza la voz contra la violencia familiar (Raise your voice against domestic violence).

The third annual meeting of this event aimed at raising public awareness, especially women, of women rights and against violence in the family and society, took place in the northern city of San Pedro Sula.
