CONAVI
Does
Not
Know
Exactly
How
Many
Of
The
Bailey
Bridges
Are
Installed
In
The
Country
There
is
more
than
one
kilometre
of
Bailey
type
bridges
on
Costa
Rican
roads,
though
the
Consejo
Nacional
de
Vialidad
(CONAVI)
is
able
to
say
exactly
how
many
of
the
Bailey
structures
are
installed.

According
to
the
CONAVI
there
are
at
least
80
Bailey
bridge
installed,
including
the
two
installed
this
past
on
the
autopista
General
Cañas.
But
the
government
is
unable
to
give
a
specific
number,
nor
is
it
willing
to
provide
a
detailed
list
of
all
the
installations.
The
Bailey
has
been
employed
by
the
CONAVI
for
temporary
and
in
many
cases
permanent
repairs
to
failing
or
failed
bridges
and
roadways.
In
fact,
it
was
the
CONAVI
who
lent
Autopistas

Sol
the
Bailey
structures
when
a
section
of
the
newly
opened
road
washed
away
two
year
ago.
The
Baileys
are
not
cheap.
Those
installed
on
the
General
Cañas
cost
the
CONAVI
¢150
million
colones
and
that
is
not
counting
the
labour
and
transport.
Over
the
last
few
years
the
CONAVI
has
been
stock
piling
Bailey
structures
and
continues
to
do
so,
with
the
latest
tender
for
for
structures
to
the
tune
of
¢1.5
billion
colones.
