Planted
For
Every
Resident
in
Costa
Rica
With
the
planting
of
tree
number
4.615.518
on
Wednesday
the
INBioparque
has
planted
one
tree
for
every
resident
in
Costa
Rica,
according
to
the
latest
report
by
the
Instituto
Nacional
de
Estadística
y
Censo
(INEC).
The
“Cristóbal”
(Platymiscium
pinnatum)
planted
is
considered
one
of
the
endangered
species
in
Costa
Rica.
Rene
Castro,
ministro
de
Ambiente
(Environment
minister)
said
"the
country
should
complement
the
52.4%
of
the
territory
that
already
is
forest
with
thousands
of
trees
planted
as
living
fences
on
ranches
or
for
coffee
shade.
These
additional
trees
give
us
wood,
fruit
and
shade.
"
During
the
ceremony,
tribute
was
paid
to
Dr.
Werner
Steinvorth,
a
pioneer
in
the
establishment
and
sustainable
use
of
forest
plantations
in
the
northern
region
of
Heredia.
His
father,
Otto
Steinvorth
began
planting
ciprés
(cypress)
in
the
form
of
windbreakers
(sistema
silvopastoril)
in
the
area.
To
date,
the
Fondo
Nacional
de
Financiamiento
Forestal
(Fonafifo)
-
National
Forestry
Financing
-
has
under
its
protection
some
795.000
hectares
of
forest.
The
plantings
are
part
of
the
plan
of
silvopastoral
systems,
Programa
de
Pago
por
Servicios
Ambientales
(PSA)
and
the
Fonafifo.
