A Tree Planted For Every Resident in Costa Rica

With the planting of tree number 4.615.518 on Wednesday the INBioparque has planted one tree for every resident in Costa Rica, according to the latest report by the Instituto Nacional de Estadística y Censo (INEC).

The “Cristóbal” (Platymiscium pinnatum) planted is considered one of the endangered species in Costa Rica.

Rene Castro, ministro de Ambiente (Environment minister) said "the country should complement the 52.4% of the territory that already is forest with thousands of trees planted as living fences on ranches or for coffee shade. These additional trees give us wood, fruit and shade. "

During the ceremony, tribute was paid to Dr. Werner Steinvorth, a pioneer in the establishment and sustainable use of forest plantations in the northern region of Heredia. His father, Otto Steinvorth began planting ciprés (cypress) in the form of windbreakers (sistema silvopastoril) in the area.

To date, the Fondo Nacional de Financiamiento Forestal (Fonafifo) - National Forestry Financing - has under its protection some 795.000 hectares of forest.

The plantings are part of the plan of silvopastoral systems, Programa de Pago por Servicios Ambientales (PSA) and the Fonafifo. and Fonafifo.
