New Leadership in Panamanian National Assembly

The Panamanian National Assembly started with a new leadership today, headed by a deputy from Cambio Democratico ,Sergio Galvez (Chello), a controversial politician that might give this legislative organization a lot of movement.

Galvez, a deputy for the popular neighbourhood of Chorrillos, started the first legislature of the 4th period of ordinary sessions in the current constitutional mandate, which coincides with the start of the pre-electoral period.

Galvez, known as "Chello" by everyone in Panama, finds a series of important projects without a conclusion since they will determine the direction that Panama will take up to the year 2014, year of the general elections.

Those who already know Galvez are predicting a convulsed period, with constant clashes, though he committed himself to establish short speeches during the parlamenterian sessions.

Hector Aparicio, a man who left the leadership of the Assembly in this first session, recommended control, equity and balance, and to dedicate the efforts to get understanding among the forces.

Galvez will be supported by his colleague Abraham Martinez (first vice president) and Miguel Fanovich, from the Molirena Party as second vice president.

His mandate will face the discussion of the law project including the package of electoral reforms, which has been stuck since September 3, 2011, as one of the first difficult topics to be considered by that legislative body.
