Saturday Water Cuts Affected Only Two Communities

Thousands woke up Saturday ready to face the day without water. On Friday the AyA water utility had advised of a water shortage for Saturday and Sunday for 11 cantons in San José and Cartago.

The cuts were due to modernization work being carried out by the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) at its Rio Macho hydroelectric plant, that would affect some 550.000 people.

However, the work was carried out normally only two communities, Coronado and Ipís de Goicoechea, northwest side of San José, were affected.

The AyA had turned off the faucet and sent water tankers to areas to be affected. But, by noon only residents of Coronado and Ipís had no water.

The work at Rio Macho is schedule to continue until tonight and may affect more people today as water levels in reservoirs, especially on the south side communities of Desamparados and east, Curridabat, Montes de Oca (San Pedro) and La Union may be affected.
