Dominican
Republic
to
Attend
Nicaraguan
Celebrations
The
Dominican
Republic
will
be
represented
by
Secretary
of
State
Miguel
Mejia
in
the
official
celebrations
for
the
33th
anniversary
of
the
triumph
of
the
Sandinista
Revolution
in
Nicaragua.
Mejia,
who
is
also
Secretary
General
of
the
Izquierda
Unida
Movement,
received
an
invitation
signed
by
Nicaraguan
Foreign
Minister
Orlando
Gomez.
"It
will
be a
pleasure
to
have
you
here
on
July
19,
sharing
with
our
people
such
an
important
celebration,"
said
the
message.
On
July
19,
1979,
the
Sandinista
Revolution
defeated
the
Anastasio
Somoza
regime,
and
then
a
period
of
promotion
of
public
health,
education
and
land-granting
programs
immediately
started.
The
Sandinistas
were
16
years
out
of
office,
but
in
November,
2006,
they
returned
to
power
under
the
leadership
of
Daniel
Ortega,
who
won
the
elections
again
in
2011.
