Permanent Solution to General Cañs Sinkhole At The End of July

It won't be until the end of the month before the Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (CONAVI) announces a permanent solution to the sinkhole problem of the autopista General Cañas.

The CONAVI press office said yesterday that engineers and technicians have met with authorities to assess the hydrological, soil and road studies.

Two solutions identified and the focus of discussion by experts is to either place an arch under the roadway or construct two bridges, one in each direction.

In the meantime, work continues on the relocation of the oil pipeline that runs alongside the autopista. The state refinery, the Refinadora Costarricense de Petróleo (Recope), has work crews on site to relocate a 16 metre section of the 12 inch pipe.

The pipe delivers gasoline products between the Alto de Ochomogo, in Cartago, storage tanks to La Garita plant in Alajuela. The pipeline also fees the Juan Santamaria internarional airport.

Francisco Rojas, distribution and sales manager for RECOPE, assures that the work will not create any shortages, especially at the San José airport.
