FMLN and Arena Continue Preparations for 2014 Elections

The two major parties in El Salvador continue their preparations for the 2014 presidential elections, even in the midst of the conflict between legislative and judicial powers, according to reports.

So far, the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN) and the Nationalist Republican Alliance (Arena) are the only ones to be publicly in the race to the elections.

The FMLN leader Marta Lilian Coto said the party formed a committee encharged of the consultation process for the preparation of the government program to be presented to the public.

The national leadership of the FMLN confirmed Vice President Salvador Sanchez Ceren as its presidential candidate, one of the historic leaders of the organization.

Arena began its process for choosing candidate last June, through a commission led by three of its four former presidents: Alfredo Cristiani, Armando Calderón Sol and Francisco Flores.

The mayor of the capital, Norman Quijano, said he expects the report of the committee, which also has the proposals from other applicants: Ana Vilma de Escobar, Gloria Salguero Gross, Francisco Lainez, and Miguel Angel Quiros.
