Charging Costa Rica's Traffic Officials Becoming A Fad

In the past couple of weeks "officiales de Tránsito" - traffic officials - have been targets of angry drivers avoiding being stopped and fined.

In one case, a traffic official was forced to draw his service revolver, thinking the worst when a woman behind the wheel charged her moving vehicle against the official.

The latest case is that of a 26 year old driver who ended up slamming into a few vehicle in his attempt to avoid the "alto" of a traffic official.

The accident occurred in Curridabat, where the driver (whose identity has been kept private) not having a drivers license and facing a fine of ˘300.000 colones and points, swerved but did not miss hitting the Tránsito before hitting three more vehicles before coming to a stop.

The driver passed the breathalyzer test, but wound up facing traffic charges of not only driving without a license, but also for the accident.
