105.000 New License Plates Already in Circulation

In seven months some 105.000 new license plates - the alpha numeric plates - are already in circulation.



The Registro Nacional (RN) began in January converting the country's license plate system to the new more secure plates and issuing an alpha numeric system for new registrations.

The RN will in the coming years forcing a replacement all the existing plates to the new plates. A vehicle owner who has to replace their current plate due to damage, loss or the most common problem of fading, will be issued the new plates that also includes a corresponding sticker that must be placed on the vehicle's windshield.

Registro officials are surprised at the number of vanity plates being requested, representing some 10% of all total plates issued.

A vanity plate costs ˘20.000 above the normal price of the plates.

The new plates has three letters - only consonants, not vowels are permitted to avoid profanity - and three numbers.
