Increase on Food Prices Coming to Costa Rica

An increase of 30% on the cost of wheat, corn and soy in the international market will effect the market in Costa Rica, predicts national entrepreneurs.

The day before, Molinos de Costa Rica had to make an adjustment of 10% on flour for baking, while the managers of other companies foresee in the next couple of days a rise in the cost of eggs, milk, beef, pork and chicken.

Rafael Carrillo, spoke person of Molinos de Costa Rica warned about the negative effects of the worst drought in the United States in the past 25 years will have on Costa Rica.

Just from June 23rd to July 24th, a metric ton of corn rose from $572.88 dollars to $814.30 dollars in the U.S. stock market, representing a 42% increase.

During this same period the price per ton of wheat also increased from $702.63 dollars to $915.50, a 30% increase, and soy beans a 16.7% increase.

La Nacion quoted agriculturists, pig farmers, chicken and other businesses related to food production, who agreed that local consumer prices will increase significantly.

Luis Mesalles, general manager of La Yema Dorada said that the value of the egg will rise due to seasonal factors and the increase of raw materials.

The President of the National Chamber of Pork Producers said that the effect of these costs are beginning to be reflected in the prices of meat.

However, Carrillo expressed his hope to reverse the rise in wheat, so there will only be an increase of 10% on flour and pastas.
