Major Eastern Routes Between Cartago and Limón Affected By The Rains

If you are travelling to and from Limón and Cartago take note, landslides and flooding are affecting many parts of the country that is causing road closures.

The closures and blockages are mainly on the routes between Cartago and Limón. Communities like Ujarrás and Tucurrique de Jiménez, Siquirries, La Suiza and Grano de Oro are the worst hit.

All routes, including the Ruta 32, between Cartago and Limón weave through the mountains and rain forests, so there is no escaping from the bad weather conditions.

The Ministerio de Obras Publicas y Transportes (MOPT) and the CONAVI have work crews working around the clock to re-open passages affected and maintaining others open.

The Ruta 32, for instance, the major route between San José and Limón is under constant surveillance. Sunday night the road was closed as a preventive measure, re-opening early Monday morning. Transport officials do not rule out more temporary closures in an attempt to keep the road operating safely.

The 32 has been filled with tragedy for the years, as fatal accidents pile up due to a lethal combination of bad road design, bad drivers, high volume of large trucks, weaving road, still climbs and bad weather, making it one of - if not the - most dangerous road in the country.
