Nicaragua:
Feasibility
of
Interoceanic
Canal
Highlighted
The
construction
of
an
interoceanic
canal
in
Nicaragua
is a
viable
economic,
social
and
environmental
alternative,
said
Vice
Minister
of
Environment
and
Natural
Resources,
Roberto
Araquistáin.
The
project
is
now
in
the
hands
of
Parliament,
responsible
of
analyzing
the
bill
for
the
creation
of a
canal
authority
and
a
great-national
(state-own)
enterprise
that
will
seek
financing
for
the
work.
The
selection
of
the
route
of
the
new
canal
will
be
the
result
of
scientific,
economic,
social
and
environmental
studies,
he
said.
According
to
the
engineer,
at
least
a
six
options
will
be
investigated
in
order
to
find
the
best
in
all
the
senses,
with
priority
in
the
care
of
natural
resources
because
the
production
of
water
that
the
basins
need
depend
on
them.
Araquistáin
explained
that
the
Nicaragua
canal
is
not
intended
to
compete
with
the
Panama
Canal
but
to
function
as a
complementary
way.
It
will
also
allow
the
passage
of
larger
boats,
400
meters
long,
60
meters
wide
and
50
meters
deep,
which
are
not
allowed
in
the
Panamanian
route,
not
even
after
its
enlargement. |
