Foreign Residency Cedula Can Now Be Renewed At Post Office

Foreign residents in Costa Rica will now be able to renew their residency cedula with less headaches and faster with the introduction of the "Ventanillas Electrónicas de Servicios (VES)", a join program by the immigration service and the post office.

The government launched the VES on Thursday, saying the system will facilitate immigration procedures and that services like residency renewal can now be done at selected Correos de Costa Rica (post office), eliminating the visit to the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería (immigration) central offices in La Uruca.

Once the program is fully operations across the country, the change will eliminate travelling to San José and associated costs, like transportation, accommodations, meals, etc

In the first phase of the program there are 12 post offices processing the renewals, they are the: San José (Correo Central), Zapote, Desamparados, Escazú, Guadalupe, Pavas, Tibás, Curridabat, San Pedro, Y Griega, Santa Ana and Alajuela locations

Before the end of the year, the government promises that a total of 60 post offices across the country will be part of the VES where foreign residents can obtain their DIMEX residency card.

Presidenta Laura Chinchilla, taking part in Thursday's ceremony, said that agreements with other government agencies and ministries to include online procession for worker pensions, the apostille and permits to carry firearms and use of explosives.
