Nicaragua:
Inter-Oceanic
Canal
to
Eliminate
Unemployment
The
construction
of
an
inter-oceanic
canal
in
Nicaragua
will
make
unemployment
disappear
in
this
nation,
predicted
the
Nicaraguan
representative,
Francisco
Mayorga,
to
the
Inter-American
Development
Bank
(IDB)
today.
According
to
Mayorga,
who
is
an
economics
expert,
the
work,
which
would
connect
the
Atlantic
and
Pacific
oceans,
will
mark
Nicaraguaâ�Ös
history
in
terms
of
before
and
after,
because
from
the
first
phase,
it
will
generate
thousands
of
jobs,
and
as
construction
progresses
additional
workers
will
be
needed.
The
channel
will
provide
great
economic
opportunities
not
only
to
Nicaragua
but
to
other
countries
in
the
world
whose
professionals
will
also
find
jobs
here,
he
said.
According
to
Mayorga,
when
National
Hero
Augusto
Cesar
Sandino
wrote
about
Bolivarâ�Ös
ultimate
dream
in
1929,
he
assured
that
Nicaragua's
destiny
should
be
this
channel
built
to
serve
the
nations
of
Latin
America.
Liberal
President
Jose
Santos
Zelaya
proposed
the
construction
of
the
canal
120
years
ago,
but
was
unable
to
achieve
it
because
of
U.S.
interests
defending
their
canal
through
Panama,
he
said.
In
addition,
as a
result
of
one
of
the
U.S.
military
interventions
in
Nicaragua,
the
Bryan-Chamorro
treaty
was
signed,
which
mortgaged
Nicaragua
to
the
northern
nation,
he
added.
The
Bryan-Chamorro
treaty
granted
perpetual
exclusive
ownership
rights
to
the
land
and
facilities
necessary
for
the
construction
of
an
inter-oceanic
canal
through
the
San
Juan
River
and
the
Lake
of
Nicaragua,
among
other
licenses.
In
Mayorgaâ�Ös
opinion,
the
draft
bill
sent
to
the
Parliament
by
the
President
of
the
Republic,
to
regulate
the
construction
of
the
canal,is
a
momentous
step,
which
has
turned
the
dream
into
a
real
project.
