"I
Am
Proud
Of
Her",
Says
Presidenta
Laura's
Dad
On
Father's
Day
At
79
years
of
age,
Rafael
Ángel
Chinchilla
Fallas,
he
has
served
five
presidents
José
Figueres
Ferrer
(1970-1974),
Daniel
Oduber
(1974-1978),
Rodrigo
Carazo
(1978-1982),
Luis
Alberto
Monge
(1982-1986)
and
Óscar
Arias
(1986-1990)
during
his
15
years
as
Comptroller
General.
But,
his
dearest
and
closest
president,
however,
is
Costa
Rica's
current
president,
his
daughter,
Laura
Chinchilla
Miranda.
In
an
interview
with
the
La
Naciona,
Don
Rafael
said,
"it
is
an
enormous
pride
to
have
a
daughter
with
such
huge
responsibilities
and
to
have
achieved
the
position
with
such
a
huge
support.
I
feel
proud".
Weighing
and
measuring
every
word,
the
country's
"first
father"
says
he
does
not
want
get
his
daughter
in
trouble
with
the
"politiquería"
(the
politics).
"I
never
imagined
she
would
have
had
the
courage
to
accept
that
bone
full
of
ants",
said
the
senior
Chinchilla.
When
asked
about
his
daughter,
Don
Rafael
forms
his
sentences
with
suspicion
and
debate
between
defense
and
nostalgia:
"In
all
administrations
there
are
irregularities
and
difficulties,"
he
said.
"We
lived
in a
humble
barriecito
called
La
Colonia
del
Sur
in a
pequeñísma
(very
small
house),
where,
when
Laura
was
born,
there
was
no
crib
in
the
room",
recounts
the
presidenta's
father.
Do
you
advise
the
presidenta?
"Laura
has
wanted
me
to
not
suffer
the
consequences
of
politics
and
try
to
stay
out.
Occasionally
she
calls
to
ask
me
any
opinion
or I
find
her
to
give
it,
but
she
prefers
the
distance".
This
is
when
a
hard
man
becomes
soft,
limited
to
grit
one's
teeth
before
giving
an
opinion
about
what
is
right
or
wrong,
explaind
Don
Rafael,
even
though
through
the
knowledge
he
accumulated
as
Comptroller
and
lawer
for
the
Ministery
of
Labour
is
an
position
to
comment
on
many
issues
and
problems
that
make
up
public
opinion.
"I
keep
quiet
so
as
not
to
generate
(for
her)
more
reactions,
more
hatred,
because
I
like
to
talk
very
clear,
very
direct,
and
this
sometimes
rubs
people
the
wrong
way".
Aside
from
all
the
politics,
the
presidenta
is
still
daddy's
girl
and
will
lunch
with
her
father
today
to
celebrate
Father's
Day.
