Bus Operators To Join Taxi Strike on Tuesday

Come Tuesday there may not be a single bus or taxi on the streets of Costa Rica with the announcement by the Cámara Nacional de Transporte to join the protest action by the "fuerza roja" (taxis).

The bus operators say they are joining the taxi strike on June 26 for the recent decision by the Constitutional Court rolling back the latest fare increase approved by the regulating authority.

Taxi drivers will be on strike Tuesday as leverage against the Ministerio de Obras Públicas y Transportes (MOPT) and the Consejo de Transporte Público, for the negotiations with the former porteadores who are seeking licensing.

The taxi drivers unions say they have negotiated in good faith with the MOPT. However, their concerns have been been heard and the strike is one way to pressure the transport ministry into not giving in to the Cámara de Porteadores.
