Time
Try
a
Bank
Five
armed
men
disguised
as
police
entered
the
La
Union,
Cartago
province,
home
of
Nicolas
Sanchez,
forced
the
family
to
lie
face
down
on
the
floor,
then
went
straight
to
the
bed
under
which
Sanchez
was
holding
39
million
colones
for
his
son
and
made
off
with
the
cash.
Sanchez
said
the
men
did
not
search
for
the
hiding
place,
indicating
prior
knowledge
of
the
stash
of
cash.
They
took
nothing
else,
not
even
the
wooden
box
which
had
held
the
bills.
An
older
son,
said
Sanchez,
had
come
at
midday
on
Sunday
to
leave
the
money,
with
which
he
had
hoped
to
make
loans.
He
had
left
the
cash
under
the
bed.
Sanchez
added
that
he
had
heard
rumors
of
the
possibility
of a
home
robbery
several
days
before
but
didn't
believe
them.
When
the
five
robbers
came
in,
the
family
was
watching
TV
and
sipping
coffee.
Announcing
that
they
were
policemen,
the
five
told
the
family
to
lie
down
on
the
floor,
related
Mercedes
Aguero,
Sanchez's
wife.
She
asked
to
see
identification,
thinking
they
were
kidding.
A
gun
barrel
pressed
to
her
head
cured
her
of
the
illusion.
Other
than
the
gesturing
with
the
guns,
the
fake
police
demonstrated
no
other
signs
of
aggressiveness.
As
they
left,
the
crooks
cautioned
the
three
adults,
two
babies
plus
a 14
year-old
boy
and
a
nine
year
old
girl
not
to
scream
but
to
be
silent
for
the
count
of
10.
Even
with
the
loss,
Sanchez
considers
himself
lucky
that
the
money
was
there
to
satisfy
the
robbers.
If
it
had
not
been,
he
said,
the
men
might
have
kidnapped
one
of
the
children.
