No Classes Today, Teachers On Strike

High school students in Costa Rica have the day off today, not because of a school holiday, but for their teachers will be out in the streets of San José in a day long strike

The Asociación de Profesores de Segunda Enseñanza (APSE) - teacher's union - is only one of the large unions to take part in the protests planned for today.

The public sector unions are protesting against the government's Plan B, its economic policies, wages and corruption.

Beatriz Ferreto, president of the APSE, explained that the concentration of public sector workers will be in the Parque Central, in the heart of San José, at 9am and then move onto the Legislative Assembly, stopping in front of the Ministerio de Hacienda and the Caja, on the way.

The Policia de Transito (traffic police) will be on full alert to divert traffic and the Fuerza Publica (police) to prevent violence and ensure security.
