Nicaragua: Literacy Campaign for 10 500 People in Rural Areas

Over 10 500 Nicaraguans in rural areas learn to read and write thanks to the new national literacy campaign initiated by the government, said the coordinator of the Communication and Citizenship Council, Rosario Murillo.

Some 4, 059 volunteers, teachers and members of the Sandinista Youth Promotoría Solidaria, teach for free in the departments of Jinotega and Matagalpa, she said.

The current campaign responds to a request by President Daniel Ortega, who in the first working session of the V National Congress of the Sandinista Youth in January, requested to bring education to rural areas.
