New Surf Competition Hits Nosara

There is a new competition in Nosara that is set to test the skills of local surfers. Organized by the Nosara Tico Surf School, the tournament will be an opportunity to raise money for the regional men’s surf team and their efforts in the national circuit.

The tournament, called the Triple Crown Surf Contest begins on March 10 at Playa Ostional then continues on March 17 at Playa Garza and will conclude on April 7 at Playa Guiones. Surfers will collect points from each round in order to advance to the final round.

Judging will be based on several characteristics, according to organizer Esteban López, including size of the wave, length of time riding the wave consistency and style. The first two contests will feature local judges and for the final round two judges from the national circuit will be brought in.

The Money benefiting local surfers will be raised through ticket sales and entrance fees. Its $5 to watch and $20 to enter, in addition Triple Crown has $1800 in surf gear and accessories to give away as prizes throughout the tournament.

As well as being a fundraiser for local surfers the tournament is also a way for the surf school to honor their friend and brother Abraham ‘Michiky’ Matacita, who died four years ago riding his bike at his fathers farm.

The contest starts at 7:30am and features several categories including open men, open women, longboard, tag-team and a junior category. There will also be a live DJ.
It should be a good day with sun forecast all day and expected wave breaks around 4ft.
