Presidenta
Calls
For
Laws
To
Combat
Intentional
Forest
Fires
In a
fly
over
of
the
area
of
Buenos
Aires
de
Puntarenas
where
a
forest
fire,
lesser
known
than
that
of
the
Chirripó,
devastated
the
La
Amistad
park,
presidenta
Laura
Chinchilla,
called
for
legislation
for
the
prevention
of
forest
fires.
"I
have
asked
the
Minaet
(Ministerio
de
Ambiente)
and
the
Bomberos
(fire
department)
to
work
out
a
law
to
combat
the
irresponsible
cause
of
forest
fires
in
the
country",
said
the
Presidenta.
In
the
first
two
months
of
this
year
more
than
3.500
incidents
have
been
reported.
"The
forest
fires
this
summer
have
caused
the
equivalent
damage
of
the
rains
and
floods
of
2010",
the
presidenta
said
on
the
social
networks.
Although
officials
are
not
commenting
on
the
cause
of
the
Buenos
Aires
fire,
they
concluded
that
the
Chirripó
fire
that
consumed
hundreds
of
acres
was
intentionally
set
or
caused
by
negligence
of
campers.
These
fires
are
not
to
be
confused
with
the
brush
fires
that
are
common
especially
in
the
province
of
Guanacaste
during
during
the
summer
or
dry
months.
One
Guanacaste
resident
told
Inside
Costa
Rica
that
the
smell
of
burning
grass
is
everywhere
and
all
residents
can
do
is
keep
an
eye
that
they
don't
get
out
of
control.
Buenos
Aires
is
located
midway
from
the
city
of
Puntarenas
and
Golfito
in
the
southern
zone.
The
province
of
Puntarenas
stretches
from
the
southern
point
of
Guanacaste
to
the
Panama
border,
along
the
Pacific
coast.
Towns
like
Jacó
and
Quepos/Manuel
Antonio
are
all
in
the
Puntarenas
province.
