Nicaragua Sanctions Family Code

The National Assembly of Nicaragua sanctioned the first Family Code in national history that brings pivotal changes to social relations and the cultural viewpoint of the people, assured MP Wilfredo Navarro.

Among the Magna Carta additions stand out 18 years as legal age for both male and female adulthood, erasing the former gender disparity, establishes shared obligation among parents, children and siblings, sets up family courts to settle such disputes, and defends of the rights of women, children and seniors and people with impairments.

Legislator Xochilt Ocampo reminds that Nicaragua has a Civil Code from 1904 which covers some family issues but the newly approved package grants options like co-ownership or pre-nuptial contracts and divorce settlement in court.

Marta Marina Gonzalez, president of the Commission on Womenâ�Ös Affairs, Child, Youth and Family, said the new Law boosts family conciliation, harmony and equality regardless of gender, age, capacities, etc, and called key to facilitate studies completion to underage pregnants to avoid their exclusion and parental duty to cover for their children maintenance.

Lawmaker Brooklyn Rivera extolled the Codeâ�Ös observance of Indigenous and African cultural features in Nicaragua and their own family traditions, integration to the community and bracing of their social structure.

Irma Davila, president of the NA Justice and Legal Affairs Commission, said the Code restores human rights foundations in speaking of values like respect and solidarity.
