New "Basic Food Basket" Take Effect Monday

Starting Monday, May 7, many consumers will get a whopping surprise at the supermarket checkout when some 90 products will begin to be taxed.

Sausages, bread, meat, fruit and milk are some of the foods that consumers come Monday will have to the 13% sales tax on.

The government's decision to include items like certain cuts of beef and pork, shrimp, prepared rice and fruits like peaches, is defended by saying they are not part of the purchases by lower income groups and feels justified to subject to the tax.

Once the regulation goes into effect, food retailers must charge the sales tax on the products and include it in sales reports and declarations.
