Opens
"The
Agony
and
The
Ecstasy
of
Steve
Jobs"

"The
Agony
and
The
Ecstasy
of
Steve
Jobs,"
a
witty
and
controversial
staged
reading
with
five
actors,
will
open
at
the
Teatro
Laurence
Olivier
(Ave.2,
Calle
28,
next
to
the
Sala
Garbo),on
Friday
May
25.
It
plays
for
two
weekends
until
Sunday
June
3.
Friday
and
Saturday
performances
are
at
7.30pm,
while
Sunday
curtain
time
is
2.30p,.
In
this
irreverent
and
humorous
piece,
with
a
generous
portion
of
spicy
language,
author
Mike
Daisy
spells
out
some
of
the
consequences
of
our
manic
lust
for
Apple
products.

The
staged
reading
was
adapted
by
Ann
Antkiw
and
Pilar
Saavedra-Vela
from
the
monologue
by
Mike
Daisey.
Cast
members
include
Barbara
Adams,
Ron
Boston,
Lisa
DeFuso,
Tom
Humes,
Caroline
Kennedy,
Susan
Liang,
and
Vicky
Longland.
Four
of
the
actors
will
share
roles
for
several
of
the
performances
at
the
Teatro
Laurence
Olivier.
When
monologist
Mike
Daisey
heard
that
someone
had
found
test
photos
of
workers
inside
several
new
iPhones,
he
was
intrigued.
He
had
always
assumed
that
Apple
devices
were
made
by
robots.
The
thought
of
just
who
it
was
that
made
millions
of
these
gadgets
took
Daisey
to
China.
Out
of
his
trip
came
The
Agony
and
The
Ecstasy
of
Steve
Jobs,
the
monologue
which
he
has
been
performing
since
2010,
a
witty
and
irreverent
piece
full
of
humor
and
spicy
language.
In
it
Daisey
weaves
the
tapestry
of
his
passion
for
Apple
products
with
stories
about
Steve
Jobs,
our
lust
for
electronics
and
the
inhumane
conditions
under
which
those
devices
are
made
in
China.
His
monologue
became
even
more
popular
after
the
death
of
icon
Steve
Jobs
in
October,
201.
Daisey
has
recently
come
under
attack
from
some
journalists
who
have
claimed,
correctly,
that
some
details
of
the
monologue
were
not
exact
or
had
been
exaggerated
Daisey
admitted
to
making
composites,
rearranging
events
and
embellishing
details
for
the
theatrical
effect
of
his
monologue
about
his
trip
to
Shenzhen,
China,
where
Apple,
Dell,
and
others
manufacture
their
products.
But
journalists
and
other
international
organizations
have,
nevertheless,
confirmed
that
the
story
that
Daisey
tells
is
essentially
true
and
that
the
conditions
which
he
describes
continue
to
this
day.
For
example,
The
New
York
Times
last
year
published
two
exposés
of
working
conditions
at
Chinese
plants
that
supply
Apple
and
other
major
electronics
companies.
And,as
recently
as
March
of
this
year,
the
Fair
Labor
Association
-- a
consortium
of
businesses,
civil
organizations
and
and
academic
institutions
that
promote
workers'
rights
and
fair
labor
standards
--
issued
a
report
denouncing
the
inhumane
working
conditions
at
Foxconn

opened
May
19
at
Hotel
Club
del
Mar
in
Jacó.
At
the
Teatro
Laurence
Olivier
(Ave.2,
Calle
28,

Sala
Garbo),
the
play
opens
Friday

25
and
will
run
through
June
3.
