THE BODY´S IMMUNE SYSTEM PART III
By Dr. Jerry Lee Hoover N.D.
The best way to stay healthy is to strengthen your
immune system. A strong immune system is able
to fight off disease. In part one I explained how
the immune system works, in part two I talked about
how important it is to be eating the right kinds of
food.
In this article I will be sharing with you the
importance of drinking a sufficient amount of water,
getting sufficient rest, exercising outside in the
fresh air and sunshine and having a positive
attitude.
Our bodies are composed of approx. 60% water, with
males having a slightly higher water content than
females. Most individuals bath regularly, keeping
the outside of their bodies clean, but they neglect
to keep the inside of their bodies clean. When one
does not drink a sufficient amount of water their
blood stream becomes impure, causing the immune
system not to function properly causing many health
problems.
Some problems caused by insufficient water are; high
blood pressure, heart problems, headaches,
constipation, kidney & bladder infections,
diabetes, cancer, arthritis, skin problems, eye
problems, etc.
As you can readily see insufficient water causes
many major health problems. With the exception of
air, there is no other element of nature that is as
important in sustaining life as water. If your urine
is constantly dark with a bad odor you are not
drinking enough water.
Sufficient rest is one of the most basic healers
known to mankind. When you are sick, what is the
first thing you do? You lie down in bed until you
recover, because the restorative power of rest is
essential to strengthening the body´s immune
system. Our bodies are a lot like a battery, they
run down during the day and need to be recharged at
night.
The most energetic people I know are quite
consistent in getting their rest. The requirement
for sleep varies with age. A baby sleeps most of the
time. A young child before the age of 6 needs about
14 hours of sleep per day. A grade school child
needs at least 12 hours and a teenager needs from
9-10 hours of sleep per day. An adult needs from 6-8
hours. Exercise daily outside in the fresh air and
sunshine is essential for good health.
Researchers at the Harvard School Of Public Health
have shown that regular exercise strengthens a
particular group of immune cells that kills viruses
and cancer cells. Exercise outside is better than
indoors, for outside air is higher in oxygen. A
moderate amount of sunshine also helps the immune
system by increasing the production of white blood
cells.
Having a positive attitude - I have found that one´s
problems are most often the result of one´s own
wrong habits and decisions. Great intellectual and
spiritual powers are not the result of chance, they
are the fruits of effort. Many of the diseases from
which men suffer are the result of mental
depression, certain classes of thoughts tend to
lower our body´s immune system causing
disease.
Some of these are; hatred, anxiety, jealousy, anger,
fear, worry, guilt ,etc. Whereas positive thoughts
such as love, compassion, joy, peace, kindness, etc.
will increase our body´s immune system.
If you faithfully follow these few guidelines I have
covered in this three part series I can promise you
that you will be helping your body to have a strong
immune system, which will in turn add health and joy
to your life.
