The Virilla Bridge: Hours After The Latest Repairs
Monday 03 August 2009: 3:10pm - less than 12 hours
following the latest repairs to the brige
The
past month, the westbound lanes of the autopista
General Cañas at the Virilla river bridge have been
a nightmare for drivers, with complete closures for
two entire weekends and many nights and temporary
closures in between, the bridge is now worse than
ever, as the latest repair work of the last 48 hours
didn't last past noon, hours after the reopening of
the highway.
The Inside Costa Rica cameras were on the bridge at
3:10pm, as traffic backed up to the immigration
service.
The bridge, for some reason and contrary to the
words of the
Consejo Nacional de Vialidad (Conavi) that
bridge is safe and the bottlenecks are only due to
drivers slowing down to look at the bridge, the
swaying on the bridge was much worse than ever felt
before and drivers slowed down because of the 8 inch
gaping hole separating two portions of the bridge.
Through the hole, the river way below can be clearly
seen!
