Bridge Dweller Is Back
For
Olman
Jimenéz Solís living
under a bridge is a way of life.
Olman was evicted from his first
home under the river bridge on
the autopista Próspero Fernández
in Piedades de Santa Ana in
December 2007 as part of the
Ministerio de Obras Públicas y
Transportes (MOPT) clean up of
some 20 families living under
bridges on the San José - Santa
Ana highway.
Olman and mother moved their
belongings to the street, not
accepting the IMAS promise of a
assisted housing.
"All I want to do is
live in peace. My only crime is
being poor",
Olman told ICR in 2007.
Within a week of the interview,
Olman and his mother moved.
This past week, Olman is back
under "his" bridge, a bridge he
claims to have been his home for
more than a decade. The
sign in front of his home tells
his story that he has been
deceived by the MOPT, the IMAS
and VIVIENDA (housing ministry)
in not fulfilling their promise
of a roof over his head.
Another signs warn of a mad dog
watching his home and his car
parked on the street.
