Settle For a Slowdown
By Paul De Barros

There are times when all you want from your vacation is to move slower than a narcoleptic construction worker. If embracing the Kenny Chesney motto,
"no shoes, no shirt, no problem" sounds awfully good, look no farther than Samara Beach, Costa Rica, a perfect beach town where the clocks don’t work.

Ideally situated on the Guanacaste coast, this beach bums paradise is a mere 5 hour bus ride from San Jose. Here you will find a handful of other travelers, which means the beach is yours to enjoy. The smooth compact sand recedes out farther than your father’s hairline while the inviting ocean dances for the amusement of all. Lounge under the protective palms, wrestle the waves, or just turn into a solar panel because on this beach, your wish comes true.

For the best place to stay head to the Posada Matilori, owned by Stefano and Yorlenny, world class amenities and rooms from $30 speak for themselves. Less than 100 meters from the beach, with orthopedic beds, cable tv, air conditioning and fan, free internet, free laundry, free coffee and tea, free boogie boards, and a fully equipped kitchen, you just can’t find a better deal than this. 506.2656.0984 – they have been experiencing problems with a duplicate phone number, make sure you are speaking with these owners. For more information go to samarabeach.com

While you can cook up a nice breakfast in the equipped kitchen and save a few colones for later, make sure you’re energized with a good lunch. Cheap prices and hearty casados (rice, beans, salad, and either chicken, steak, or fish) will fill you up before you hit the surf. Another good idea is to grab a pie from Pizza a Go Go, located on the main avenue, now you can snack while you are propped up on the beach.

For the perfect dinner, stroll down to Laconda restaurant, located on the beach, 100 meters south of the police station at the main beach entrance. 506.2656.0036
Cozy adirondack chairs and thick tree trunk tables sit nestled in the sand, while white twinkle lights drape from overhanging palm trees. Hear the waves crash – sometimes even splashing up to your feet, as reggae music hypnotizes from the distance.

To find the local nightlife, simply follow the waves. Bar Olas is one of the best local hangouts, but if you listen for the music you can find several other dive bars situated along the beach.

So when you just need to settle in for a slowdown, let the serene Samara Beach heal you.

Does it ever seem like all that energy, planning, and paying just to enjoy your vacation makes it feel like, well not a vacation?

If you make Samara beach, Costa Rica your next destination all those worries will drift away. Sometimes you want a vacation to be action-packed and fast paced, other times, you just need a slowdown.

The next time you feel like getting away from it all and burying your problems in the sand, head to Playa Samara, Costa Rica. Sometimes you want a vacation to be action-packed and fast paced, other times, you just need a slowdown.

With a smooth sprawling beach, a crystal blue-green ocean, and protective palms, that’s what you find in this quaint beach town. During the daytime locals lounge under shady palm trees while tan-seekers stretch out. Others try their hand at boogie boarding or wrestle with the waves. The tide recedes farther out than your fathers hairline, which means there’s a whole lot of beach waiting for you.
