Some Beach
By Paul De Barros
Finding the right beach in Costa Rica is
like naming your favorite Halle Berry body
part, with so many choices you can’t quite
make up your mind.
This being said, sometimes you wake up with
a pounding headache and just need to find a
beach, anything with sand and warm water
will do the trick. In the event that this
occurs you won’t be picky - bickering about
shades of sand color, water transparency
levels, or the quality of surf conditions.
You’ll be thinking of a bottle of water and
that refreshing feeling of diving into the
ocean, nothing else.
In a state such as this, you’re ready for
Jaco beach. One of the closest beaches from
San Jose, the ocean awaits a mere two hours
by bus. Head downtown to calle 16, between
avenidas 1 and 3 for tickets, buses start at
6am.
By the time you arrive food will be sounding
awfully good, so keep your eyes peeled for
one of these Jaco beach staples:
For the most important meal of the day, head
to Sunrise, where they offer a nice American
style breakfast. 643.3361
When it comes to lunch, the locals know
best. Simply walk down the main-street and
find a food stand. It looks like a cross
between your kid’s favorite sporting event
snack shack and a New York City street
vendor. They’ll grill your lunch right in
front of you. The best parts are the insane
low prices and that they pack it to go. Now
you can eat while you’re lying in the sand
with your feet in the water – the way food
always tastes best.
But if by chance you’re feeling worn out
from the beating sun, grab a little sombra
at El Bohio restaurant and bar. This is the
only spot actually on the beach, located at
the end of el Bohio Street. 2643.3182 You’ll
find hearty portions filled with great
seafood and salads. Be sure to notice the
hand-blown glass your drink of choice is
floating in.
After a full day of sunbathing,
wave-jumping, and rehydrating, you may feel
like a little hair of the dog. If so, you’re
in the right place. Jaco beach is famous for
its sweet surfing and rowdy night-life.
Imperial flows like water here, with
nightclubs, casinos, and dive-bars on every
corner. Meaning one thing, this little beach
town really comes alive when the sun goes
down.
So when the ocean is your only cure, crawl
onto the local bus and let the waves of Jaco
heal you….and if that doesn’t work, you are
in the right place to just keep on boozing.
