Surfs Up
By Paul De Barros

If you like surfing you will truly love and I mean L.O.V.E. Mal Pais, Costa Rica. Perched on the southwestern tip of the Nicoya Peninsula, this idyllic surf spot pulls wave seekers from across the globe.

And even if riding waves isn’t your thing, a relaxed atmosphere and soft sandy beaches can make anybody smile. A great place for sun-bathing, beach walking, and dining & drinking, you can sit back and watch it all.

Here a wide dirt road forms the downtown highway, small local shops and tasty restaurants - the crowded skyline, and rush hour traffic is comprised by bicycles and ATVs.

Finding the right place to stay is easy:

Look for the Mal Pais Surf Camp and Resort, situated 500 meters from Franks Place (the downtown corner). www.malpaissurfcamp.com. A one of a kind resort where any and all types of travelers can find comfortable accommodations.

For those budget travelers, backpackers and groups can lounge in the spacious ranchos. Large, breezy room which sleeps 6 at a low price - $45 for 4 people. For couples, the cozy cabinas are a nice option and at $35 a night you cant go wrong.

The poolside Villa is an elegant choice for a romancing couple or a family traveling, there are two double beds and a single bed - $95 per night. Larger groups can also reserve the roomy apartments, complete with a full kitchen.

The surf camp is more of a sprawling resort, complete with a refreshing pool, lounge chairs, massage parlor, campground, full restaurant and the bar where surf movies will be playing all day.

When you feel inspired this is the place to try your hand at riding the waves. The resort offers board rentals and lessons at some of the best prices in town.

Mal Pais is a laid-back, surfer and traveler’s paradise and if you’re visiting Costa Rica, this has to be one of your top destinations.
