Defamation a libel have always been sensitive factors in Costa Rica simply because most trials are by the media and not in the court. As well, a reputation in Paradise, a super small country, is truly critical to success. This case is far from being the 1st. Costa Rica once tried to sue U.S. News and World Report Magazine, but lost.

If it is true that a simple retraction was all they wanted, I believe they might have gotten it by simply showing the reporter how her article misstated facts. It seems to me that there is a metamessage in all this: that they will go after any detractors.
