for the last 4 years the colone has been stronger than the dollar because of purposeful debasement of the dollar by the fed. in the Central America only the Nica cordoba is falling in value more than the dollar. maybe you would want to hitch up to that one? currently ticos are buying dollars to keep the colone weak as the dollar. stop that crap and tico salaries might have value. what works for panama is it’s lack of high import taxes and low taxes in general. every country would benefit from lower taxes. no mystery there.

I think a better solution would be for Costa Rica to do away with their colones and go on the U.S. dollars system. At least the dollar is worth something and has some backing (not what it use too). The colone has no back and is worth nothing. It has worke with Panama and would work with Costa Rica.

nuts. taxing cds, not speculation, will not stop the gringos in their race for dollar destruction. what costa rica loses in tourism and exports it will gain in the people paid in colones being able to feed their families at pali. this is 100% gringo caused. currency devaluation is stupid, it is especially stupid to do it because other stupids are doing it. odumbo, bernanke .et .al

Eventually, the dollar does need to float, but to allow that overnight would likely force both exporters and tourism to take such a hit that businesses would close, there would be massive layoffs, and other nasty effects would spread throughout the economy. The smarter approach, which most experts are recommending, is to address the problem of speculative capital first (a problem that is ironically in part created by the defended floor) and then ease off defending the dollar until you get to a full float. This is the “soft landing” the experts are hoping to engineer, and I for one hope they can pull it off. The alternative is not pretty. Alas, odds are that there are a lot of backroom negotiations going on now to protect the fat cats and when the pin is pulled a lot of little folks are still going to take a wallop, but I hope I’m wrong.
