Costa Rica is in a unique position to develop a energy resource that will produce ZERO emissions. Very few places exist in the world where this can be done. Every watt of energy produced by geotherm can and will displace vastly more polluting providers. The amount of land needed is due to the engineering requirements of geotherm production. It is not a concentrated “plant” like a petrol-fueled generating facility and won’t fill all that area with huge buildings – many parts are underground.

I see the points from both sides here, but 1,000 hectares is a lot of land. I don’t see why they would need more than an acre or two. I think though, insead of opposing things outright the environmental groups need to propose alternative solutions or compromises.

The environmentalists can’t have it both ways. The country needs power and is unwilling to allow for oil/gas exploration, and geothermal is a renewable energy resource. Yes, Rincon de la Vieja is beautiful, but what are some realistic alternatives? (Too many naysayers and not enough suggestions from these people).
