If our company had the means at this moment (still in the process) after some growth, we would subsidize our renewable energy products at our firm, for public facilities & (for those who can pay into a subsidized financed option over a course of time) what is called a neighborhood-shared supplement in specific areas where surges present a problem; if we do end up deciding to expand to Costa Rica, which is what the current goal is. This would not be for generating revenue, but not only for aiding local communities, but perhaps one day, the entire nation of Costa Rica.

I lived in Costa Rica for 12 years, in the country between Turrialba and Siquirres, and although the power supply was often unreliable I never had any household electronic or electric unit damaged. Perhaps this was rare but I also can state that i never heard of anyone I knew experiencing the problem, either! I had several units that required replacement due to corrosion though and often that can also contribute to other electrical failures.

Just a little advice get off the grid if you can afford it i have solar and try to stay off ICE net work as much a possible. ICE is a joke two years ago they fryed two of my computers and a stove because they screwed up at the head office with surges. Good luck start protect yourself from these corupt bunch.

ICE hates changing they just like raising there rates on everyone. Congress is a joke in Costa Rica they do nothing and get paid to dam well. I know staff that are retiring from ICE and leaving with $6000.00 a month in pension what the hell is going on at ICE they can´t keep the power on but have all sorts of money to pay there staff that do very little to make the Average Costa Rican life better.

I probably have no business commenting on this complex matter because I have NO technical knowledge on the subject of electrical service delivery but the events described in your article do not surprise me. Where I live, the following electrical equipment my home has been “baked” beyond repair which I blame on high or low power fluctuations: One 2 year old refrigerator; One 2 year old cloths dryer; One shelf- stereo; One Microwave oven; One surge protector bar. (which nearly burned my house down).

Is it not possible to apply more proactive measures to avoid such power surges such as: Install filters of some sort at the source of the power supply and along the grids? And make more of an effort to clear and keep clear the easement corridors where lines run through forests or across other dangerous territories? In my area, problem trees and vines are NEVER taken away until they have become a problem….like when the lines are wiped out due to a natural occurrence.

In another jurisdiction I am familiar with, the electrical provider was sued enough times by home-owner groups and business that they finally got the message and did what was needed to ameliorate the risks to their power supply lines.
