On the surface the diesel engines would charge the batteries and help circulate fresh air. Once submerged the sub runs on battery power. The exhaust and intake covered. (Now nuclear power of course).. So the diesel engines need air and exhaust right? That is why there is a snorkel above the water line semi submerged. Duke I bet you're saying you knew that now. :)

The older subs had diesel engines and huge batteries. This type has almost all of the vessel under water but the cockpit and air tube are above water. I just wonder why a boat can't be designed where the entire boat runs just under the surface. Even the few feet of the cockpit under water also. But then I am not too bright--just a simple question. Anyone know why? I realize there are submarines which run very deep under water but since they have successfully engineered a boat which is for the most part just a few feet under water, why the cockpit can't be a few feet under water as well? Not that I am rooting for drug runners at all.

Seems like they could have some boats which entirely run just under the surface.
