Abortion of
Anencephalic Fetuses Fires Debate
The
abortion of anencephalic fetuses -which have no brain -- is legal in
Brazil since Jul. 1 as the result of a preliminary court ruling that the
Catholic Church is eager to quash, and the question has fuelled the
national debate on abortion.
The Brazilian bishops' conference (CNOB) would like to invalidate the
decision handed down by Supreme Court justice Marco Aurelio de Mello,
which allows the termination of pregnancy in cases involving
anencephalic fetuses, and suspended all lawsuits and sentences against
women and health professionals accused of committing illegal abortions
in such cases.

Turning in the direction of the rustling
leaves, we saw the troop of howler monkeys pause to stare at us before
leaping away single file onto the branches of some ceiba and tamarind
trees.
Now it was our turn. Clipped into a climbing harness and hooked to a
cable strung through a Costa Rican forest, first my 22-year-old
daughter, Alissa, and then I hesitantly inched off a 20-foot-high
platform to zip through the treetops.
