The
Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad
(ICE), currently the sole provider of
cellular and internet telecommunications in
the Costa Rica, will soon have competition,
as the process of opening the telecom market
continues.

Taxi drivers are asking customers to fork
over the tolls at Escazú, even though the
Concejo de Transporte Público (CTP)
prohibits additional charges, but is
supported by the taxi association, the Foro
Nacional de Taxistas.
INVU President Quits After Drunk Driving
Incident
Jorge Arturo Sánchez Zúñiga resigned
on Monday as the president of the Instituto
Nacional de Vivienda y Urbanismo (INVU).
The resignation was contained in a two
paragraph letter to Costa Rican president,
Óscar Arias Sánchez, announcing his
immediate resignation.

Salaries Increase 2%
Private sector workers were expecting a much
higher salary increase for the second half
of 2009, when the Consejo Nacional de
Salarios voted to approve a 2% increase.

ICE's sale of 65.000 GSM lines got off to a slow start Monday morning. At the Pavas agency, at 9:30am only a handful of customers waited for service. One ICE employee blamed the small turnout on Father's Day, saying Ticos spent all their money on Dad. Whatever the reason, the cellular fever of the past seems to be over, as Ticos struggle with the economic crisis.
