Life Expectancy In Mexico Over 75 Years

MEXICO D.F. - Life expectancy increased in Mexico an average of 14.8 years since 1970 until now thanks to heath care, pointed out the National Population Council (CONAPO).

Life expectancy for women is 77.8 years and for men 73.1 in the whole country, the institution reported the day before celebrating the World Health Day.

If taking into account the Millennium Development Goals and the goals of the International Conference on Population and Development for 2005, countries should have a life expectancy over 70 years and for 2010 over 75. Both goals were attained in most Mexican land, CONAPO pointed out.

CONACO remembered also that the demographic transition in Mexico caused a change in the epidemiologic profile because chronic degenerative diseases like diabetes mellitus and high blood pressure are more frequent.

Due to population aging, the mortality rate increased slightly, with five deaths for 1.000 inhabitants. A tendency that will continue to have 6.6 in 2030, CONAPO estimated.

This year the 74.3 percent of the deaths were due to non-transmissible diseases such as heart and vascular diseases, tumors and diabetes mellitus.

To CONAPO the reduction of the infant mortality rate is one of the main socio- demographic indicators that reflects Mexicans life.

Despite significant progresses, the institution said the country is facing new health risks due to the increase in the cost of chronic degenerative disease treatment in adults.
