ICE President Going To Trial
Over Use Of Helicopter
The Juzgado Penal de Hacienda announced said
it would take to trial charges against the
president of the Instituto Costarricense de
Electricidad (ICE), Pedro Pablo Quirós, his
wife Ana Isabel Salazar Arias and executive
assistant David Barboza Zúñiga, for the
personal use of a helicopter paid for by the
state institution.
The three will be tried for embezzlement and
misappropriation, the press office of the
Ministerio Público announced on Tuesday
afternoon.
The charges stem back to March 21, 2009,
when Quirós, accompanied by his spouse, used
a helicopter hired by ICE to transport ICE
officials to the Cariblanco hydroelectric
plant in Cinchona, hit by an earthquake on
January 8, 2009.
Quirós is alleged to have used the
helicopter to attend a wedding in between
flights in attending ICE meetings.
The Fiscalía alleges that Barboza Zúñiga was
person responsible for overseeing the
expenses related to the Cariblanco situation
and that the helicopter was to be used only
for official ICE business and ICE employees.
The court decision to take the case to trial
was taken after a full analysis of the
charges presented by the Fiscalía Adjunta de
Delitos Económicos, Corrupción y Tributarios
following a hearing on March 26, 2009. |
