Drivers In Costa Rica Rack Up
¢1.8 Billion Colones In Fines In One Month
The new Ley de Tránsito is good business, or
at least on paper. The Policía de Tránsito
reports that in a little over a month they
have issued fines in excess of ¢1.8 billion
colones (us$3.4 million dollars).
But, it is unknown if they will be able to
collect as most drivers are appealing the
tickets, as the current bunch of lawmakers
who are on their way out in the next couple
of weeks, scurry to pass changes to the law
that would reduce the amount of the fines
and other changes to the law they (the same
group of legislators) passed in December
2008 and that went into effect on March 1,
2010.
The Consejo de Seguridad Vial (COSEVI)
records indicate that the Tránsito officials
issued a total of 21.477 tickets from March
1 to April 5.
The ¢1.8 billion colones in fines is more
than 125 times the normal ¢14 million
colones issued by Tránsito on average
monthly.
