Traffic Fatalities Drop In First Three
Months of 2010
Last month was the month with the least
number of deaths on Costa Rica's roads and
the main reason why the Policía de Tránsito
(traffic police) promises more vigilance and
spot checks.
The Policía de Tránsito attributes the lower
number of fatalities to the new Ley de
Tránsito that went into effect on March 1,
2010, among other things.
In total, there were 71 fatalities from
January 1 to March 31, the lowest number
since 2005 when 65 fatalities were recorded
for the same period.
The Policía de Tránsito reports that last
month there were only 24 fatalities, the
main cause being excessive speed, followed
by pedestrian carelessness that accounted
for 10 of the deaths. Reckless and drunk
drivers were responsible for 7 deaths each.
The objective of the intensified police
operation on the roads is to effect a change
on the nation's roads and to end 2010 with
the lower number of traffic accident deaths
ever.
The phrase "Costa Rica is a nation of peace,
but is waging a war on its roads", has been
taken seriously as the Policía de Tránsito
headed by Germán Marín is adamant in winning
that war.
